Background of the study:
The rising incidence of vehicle theft in urban centers necessitates advanced security systems to protect personal and commercial vehicles. In Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State, vehicle theft has become a significant concern, affecting both individual owners and overall public safety. IoT-based smart anti-theft vehicle tracking systems offer a promising solution by enabling real-time monitoring, precise location tracking, and immediate alerts upon unauthorized movement (Muhammad, 2023). These systems employ sensors, GPS technology, and wireless communication to provide continuous surveillance, thereby enhancing the likelihood of rapid recovery of stolen vehicles. The integration of IoT into vehicle security has revolutionized traditional methods by offering data-driven insights and deterrence capabilities (Salihu, 2024). By linking vehicle tracking to mobile applications and centralized control centers, these systems can provide instantaneous alerts and detailed historical data on vehicle movements (Abdul, 2025). This real-time monitoring not only deters theft by increasing the risk of detection but also aids law enforcement in swift intervention. Moreover, the data analytics capabilities inherent in IoT systems enable the identification of high-risk areas and trends in theft, which can inform more targeted security measures. Given the increasing rate of vehicle theft in Kano Municipal LGA, the adoption of such technology is both timely and critical for enhancing urban security.

Statement of the problem:
Vehicle theft in Kano Municipal LGA poses serious risks to public safety and economic stability. Traditional security measures based on manual tracking and delayed reporting are inadequate, leaving vehicle owners vulnerable to loss. The lack of a comprehensive, real-time monitoring system means that law enforcement often receives delayed information, hampering swift recovery and prosecution of offenders (Ibrahim, 2023). This gap in timely data collection and analysis allows theft incidents to escalate, contributing to public insecurity. Additionally, the current fragmented security infrastructure fails to integrate advanced analytics that could predict and prevent theft, leading to inconsistent outcomes. The high cost and complexity of modern tracking technologies further limit their adoption among vehicle owners, widening the gap between available solutions and practical implementation. Addressing these issues is critical for enhancing vehicle security, restoring public confidence, and reducing the socioeconomic impacts associated with vehicular theft in the region.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the effectiveness of IoT-based smart anti-theft vehicle tracking systems in reducing vehicle theft.

  2. To assess the integration of real-time tracking and data analytics in enhancing vehicle security.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving the implementation and adoption of IoT-based tracking systems in Kano Municipal LGA.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are IoT-based smart anti-theft systems in deterring and reducing vehicle theft in Kano Municipal LGA?

  2. What challenges are encountered in integrating real-time tracking and data analytics in vehicle security systems?

  3. How can the implementation of IoT-based tracking systems be optimized to enhance their adoption and effectiveness?

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the role of IoT-based tracking systems in combating vehicle theft. The findings will inform law enforcement agencies and vehicle owners about effective security strategies, contributing to safer urban environments and reduced economic losses.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing the effectiveness of IoT-based smart anti-theft vehicle tracking systems in Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State. It does not extend to other regions or IoT applications in different security contexts.

Definitions of terms:

  1. IoT (Internet of Things): A network of interconnected devices that collect and exchange data.

  2. Smart Anti-Theft Vehicle Tracking System: A technology-driven system that monitors vehicle location and movement to detect unauthorized activities.

  3. Real-Time Monitoring: The continuous observation and analysis of data as it is collected, enabling immediate responses to events.
